	14                                            THE LEFT HAND FINGERS Now that the pupil has acquired a fair tremolo movement, he may practice placing the left hand fingers on the strings, as follows: Place the first finger on the 2nd fret of the fourth or C string and keep it there, place the third finger on the fourth fret of the same string, then the fourth finger on the fifth fret. Be sure and keep all three fingers down, see that every finger down is well curved, and that one does not touch the other. Repeat the same thing on the other strings. Exercises on the Four Strings Figures placed above the notes, indicate the fingers of the left hand used in stopping the strings at the frets. Figures below indicate the fret at which the string is stopped. A Zero (o) indicates an open string. Never raise the finger when down unless it is nec­essary in order to produce another note. The cross (x) means keep the finger on that note. Play fpiir strokes to each count (D-U-D-U) Thus a whole note having four counts would receive 16 strokes.
